The Portland Police
Museum is a project of the Portland Police Historical Society and
has been in existence since 1976. The Portland Police Historical
Society is a non-profit organization formed by the members of the
Portland Police Bureau and interested groups and individuals.
One half of the museum features a series of chronologically arranged
exhibits offering photographs, equipment and uniform artifacts.
The emphasis is upon the experience of the individual Portland Police
Officer over the last 150 years.
The
other half of the museum displays a variety of photographs and documents
featuring specific officers using items from the museum archive.
In addition, visitors are welcome to use
the newly dedicated Memorial Room to contemplate the sacrifice of
the twenty-six Portland Police officers killed in the line of duty
since 1867.
